Peter Facer: Oboist
Peter Facer was born and raised in Hertfordshire and then attended Cambridge University, graduating with a double first-class degree. He then studied the oboe as a postgraduate at the Royal Academy of Music in London where he graduated with distinction and earned the DipRAM for an outstanding final exam. He then went on to study at music conservatories in Hannover and Rostock in Germany.
Whilst a student, he also landed the position of Principal Oboe with the European Union Youth Orchestra, and was honoured to have been awarded the Lionel Bryer Prize for Outstanding Musicianship upon his departure from the Orchestra.
Peter then embarked on an antipodean adventure, where he won the solo positions of Principal Oboe of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and Principal Oboe of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO). He also featured as a concerto soloist in the world premiere of Andrew Schultz’s evocative concerto ‘Maali’, which was written especially for him and WASO to perform.
After three years down under, Peter returned to the UK and is now incredibly busy working as a freelance oboist. He has played guest principal oboe with numerous orchestras of the British Isles including the Philharmonia, BBC Symphony, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, English National Opera, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, and also regularly gives concerts as a solo recitalist and chamber musician.
“A beautifully sensitive, eloquent oboe soloist”
Peter Facer: Composer
Peter Facer studied music at Cambridge University, where he specialized in analysis and composition, studying with Martin Ennis, Robin Holloway, and Giles Swayne. Whilst at university, he was asked to write several pieces for Girton College Chapel Choir, and also penned his popular ‘Insect Etudes’ for solo oboe. This piece is now performed by oboists around the globe and is a set piece for the Australian Music Examinations Board oboe diploma exam.
Peter has a particular interest in writing music for the stage, and an incidental orchestral suite of music based on his score for the play Peter Pan won the Orpheus Composer of the Year competition in 2014. He has also written incidental music for the play Peer Gynt and for several new works performed on the London Fringe Theatre scene.
Aside from contemporary classical music, Peter has also penned two musicals: The Crystal Maze Musical, which was a homage to the TV show of the same name; and Girton – The Musical, a satirical send-up of his alma mater, Girton College, Cambridge. The latter is still being performed at the college, twelve years later!
